Updated September 15, 2026. Buffalo Trace Distillery has confirmed the 2026 Van Winkle Collection, the once-a-year release that includes every bottle of Pappy Van Winkle. Six whiskeys are coming, the suggested prices are unchanged from last year, and, as always, the hard part is finding one. Here is the full lineup, what each bottle costs at MSRP, when to expect it, and how to buy Pappy Van Winkle online from a licensed retailer without getting burned.
The 2026 Van Winkle Collection at a glance
| Bottle | Age | Proof | 2026 MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon | 10 years | 107 | $169.99 |
| Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon (Lot B) | 12 years | 90.4 | $199.99 |
| Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve Bourbon | 15 years | 107 | $299.99 |
| Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve Bourbon | 20 years | 90.4 | $399.99 |
| Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve Bourbon | 23 years | 95.6 | $499.99 |
| Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye | 13 years | 95.6 | $299.99 |
MSRP is the price Buffalo Trace suggests. Retailers set their own prices, and state taxes and fees vary, so the number on the shelf is almost never the number on this table. More on that below.
What is new in the 2026 release
The lineup itself has not changed. The same six expressions have made up the Van Winkle Collection for years, and the family has said it has no plans to add or drop a bottle. What changes is the whiskey inside. Every barrel that goes into a Van Winkle bottling is selected by the family, and because the stock is aged 10 to 23 years, each year's batch tastes a little different from the last. Fourth-generation family member Preston Van Winkle summed up the approach in the announcement: "There are no shortcuts when you're talking about whiskey aged this long."
Company president Julian P. Van Winkle III framed the release the way the family always does, as a link between generations of Van Winkles and the people who wait all year for a bottle. The message from Frankfort is consistent: quantities are limited, the whiskey is ready when it is ready, and the distillery would rather ship fewer bottles than rush a barrel.
When does the 2026 Van Winkle release hit shelves?
Buffalo Trace announced the collection on September 11, 2026 and ships it each fall through Sazerac's distributor network to retailers, bars and restaurants across the country. In practice that means bottles start landing at stores in October and November, and most retailers see their allocation in a single delivery.
A few things worth knowing before you start calling around:
- Allocations are tiny. A typical liquor store receives a handful of bottles for the entire year, sometimes only one or two of the higher ages. Big-box chains and control states often run lotteries or raffles.
- The 10 and 12 year are the most common. If you see any Van Winkle in the wild, it is most likely Old Rip Van Winkle 10 or the Special Reserve 12. Pappy 20 and 23 are the rarest bottles Buffalo Trace makes.
- Control states publish dates. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and other state-run systems usually post their Van Winkle lottery windows in October. If you live in one, that is your best shot at MSRP.
MSRP versus what Pappy Van Winkle actually costs
This is the part most release articles skip. Pappy Van Winkle 15 has a suggested price of $299.99. Almost nobody pays that, because demand outruns supply by a wide margin and has for more than a decade. Once the handful of MSRP bottles are gone, the rest of the market trades at whatever price buyers will pay. Recent retail asking prices have run roughly $1,000 to $2,000 for Pappy 15, $2,500 or more for Pappy 20, and $3,500 and up for Pappy 23, with Old Rip Van Winkle 10 and the Special Reserve 12 in the high hundreds.
The Van Winkle family is open about the fact that it does not control retailer pricing. What it does control is who it warns you about: the family's advice is to buy only from licensed sellers, because the unlicensed secondary market is where counterfeit bottles and payment scams live. Anyone who runs into fraud is encouraged to report it to the Better Business Bureau and their state attorney general.
At BuyMyLiquor we are a licensed retailer, we list our price on the product page, and we do not run a lottery. When we have a Van Winkle bottle it is priced at the going market rate, clearly, and it ships to you with adult signature required. If a bottle is sold out, use the notify-me button on the product page and you will get an email the moment it is back.
Bottle by bottle: which Van Winkle is right for you
Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year, 107 proof
The entry point and the boldest pour in the collection. Wheated bourbon at 107 proof, with the caramel, vanilla and baking-spice profile the brand is known for, plus enough heat to stand up to a big cube. If you want to drink Van Winkle rather than display it, start here. Shop Old Rip Van Winkle.
Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year "Lot B", 90.4 proof
Softer and rounder than the 10, with more oak and dried fruit. Lot B is the bottle many longtime fans quietly prefer, and it is usually the easiest of the six to find at a fair price.
Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year, 107 proof
The bottle that made the brand a phenomenon. Fifteen years in the barrel at full 107 proof gives you deep toffee, leather, dark cherry and a long, drying finish. Collectors and drinkers both want this one, which is why it is the most counterfeited bourbon in America. Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year at BuyMyLiquor.
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year, 90.4 proof
Two decades of Kentucky summers, bottled at a gentler proof. Expect more wood, more tobacco and a silkier texture than the 15. Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year at BuyMyLiquor.
Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year, 95.6 proof
The oldest, rarest and most expensive bottle Buffalo Trace releases. Heavily oaked, dark and complex, and produced in the smallest quantities of the six. Most 23s never get opened. Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year at BuyMyLiquor.
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year, 95.6 proof
The only rye in the lineup and, for whiskey geeks, often the pick of the release. Thirteen years turns the spice of a rye into something closer to a dessert: brown sugar, mint, orange peel and old oak. Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye at BuyMyLiquor.
How to buy Pappy Van Winkle online safely
- Buy from a licensed retailer. A real liquor license means the seller is accountable to a state regulator. Facebook groups, marketplace listings and "private collectors" are not.
- Check the bottle, not just the box. Genuine Van Winkle bottles carry a laser-etched code on the glass and a tax strip that matches the release year. A pristine box with a mismatched strip is a red flag.
- Be suspicious of MSRP online. No legitimate online retailer has Pappy 15 for $299 sitting in a cart. Anyone advertising it is running a scam or a lottery.
- Pay with a card. Never wire money or use a payment app for a bottle you cannot dispute.
- Expect adult-signature delivery. Every legal spirits shipment requires a 21-plus signature at the door. A seller who does not mention it is not shipping legally.
